FAQ
When should we apply?
We would encourage you to submit your application at least 2 years prior to the proposed starting date for your child. However we do accept applications from any age and throughout the year, with many of our families choosing to register from birth.
Do you have a waitlist?
Yes. We generally receive many more applications than places available and some applicants may need to go on our waitlist.
Is there a cut off date?
No, we continue to accept applications right up until the start of the school year, however later applicants will be considered, depending on availability.
What are the main entry points?
The main entry points are Year 1 and Year 7. There are sometimes limited places available in other year groups as movement in the roll occurs during the school year. Should a place become available we would select from our waitlist for that year group.
Do you accept pre-school students?
Yes, King’s School now offers places for four year old boys in our Early Learning Centre. The application process is the same as for school age applicants.
Can I visit the school before deciding?
Yes, we welcome prospective families to the school throughout the year, by appointment. Please contact the Admissions Office to arrange your personal campus tour. We also hold two Open Days each year.
What happens after I apply?
You will receive written acknowledgement of your application and information about the next stage of your application. All applications are indivdually assessed, and if a place is available, you may be asked for an interview with the Headmaster, where parents and their son will be interviewed in a relaxed and informal setting. A written offer of a place would follow if the application is successful, and upon receipt of the Acceptance Fee, the place is confirmed.
When will my son be placed in a House and how is the selection of Houses made?
All boys are placed in Houses when they join the School. Parents who have prior connections with the School may nominate a particular House for their son. Otherwise, placement in Houses is done by staff.
Are there buses or trains to school?
School minibuses
To help with transportation, King’s School now has buses from the North Shore, Pt Chev, Westmere, Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, Herne Bay, St Mary’s Bay, Freeman’s Bay and Epsom. The transport is via small buses and mini vans. The boys swipe on/off and are only charged for the trips they take. They may also use this service for friends traveling with them to/from school.
Each bus has a tracker so parents can see the exact location of the bus to help with meeting the bus in the mornings or greeting the bus in the afternoon (great for afternoons of heavy traffic). Bus monitors from Year 8 are appointed on each bus ensuring parents of boys of all ages are comfortable using the service.
Please contact our Admissions and Relationship Manager, Katie McInness for more information or if you would like a bus put on from other locations as we grow this service.

If my son falls ill during the day, what care is given and will I be contacted?
In the event of a boy being unwell or injured during the day, he is taken to the Main Office and cared for by the School Nurse. If the illness is such that the boy is required to go home, the Office will contact his parents immediately.
Is my son able to order lunches at school?
Yes, the school has a lunch order system for those that may not wish to provide their own packed lunchbox. The school encourages healthy eating options for all the boys.
How much homework will my son have?
It is the school’s belief that boys should always read at home but not be burdened with time-consuming projects. Any homework set will either be meaningful work to prepare for class or to practise what the boys may have learnt in class. Homework routines will be established and more structured homework is given to boys in the Senior School as they prepare for Secondary School.
