ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES
King's School offers a wide variety of Extra-Curricular Academies for our boys as well private Music, Speech and Drama lessons. We have a number of specialist clubs and organisations providing training by highly experienced coaches and tutors in their fields.
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACADEMIES
King’s Extra-Curricular Academies offer a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities for all ages from the Prep School to the Senior School.
We offer the following unique programmes:-
ARCHERY
Archery is a great sport that is both competitive and social. Our instructors have only four out of eight students shooting at one time so they can have their full focus on a small number of students. A very popular choice so it fills up quickly.
BADMINTON
Run in conjunction with the New Zealand Badminton Academy, the King’s Sports School offers a programme designed for players of all levels. Students will learn foundation skills, develop their hand/eye co-ordination and compete against each other in friendly competition.
BASKETBALL
Our basketball programme is a great way to improve basketball skills and knowledge.
The aim is to give children a grounding in the game and introduce them to competitive basketball via a local league. Training will give participants an opportunity to improve their basketball skills; including passing, shooting, ball-handling and footwork. Players will then apply these skills in a fun and competitive game situation.
A key component of the programme is to develop young basketballers to the point where they will enter and compete in local leagues. Emphasis will be placed on skills used in a game of basketball.
All boys, of all ability levels, are welcome to join. If boys are interested in playing for the school then league games will be played at St Kentigern Boys' School after school.
CHESS
Chess is a very popular option at King's School and a fantastic game to get the mind working. Mr Ewan Green leads our Chess tutors who prove beginner, intermediate and advanced coaching sessions.
FOOTBALL
The beautiful game of football is brought to you by Cobi Allen and coaches from Elite Sports. The emphasis is on fun, ball mastery and learning about the various aspects of the game. A key component in this class is to not only become a better footballer but to also encourage good character and sportsmanship.
FLIPPA BALL, MINI POLO & WATER POLO
Flippa Ball (Year 3 & Year 4) is a great entry level sport which leads into Water Polo. The boys get to learn the sport and compete regularly in
an outside league competition.
Mini Polo (Year 5 & Year 6) is also an opportunity for boys to learn the basics of beginner Water Polo skills and the rules of the sport. Teams compete regularly in an outside league competition.
Water Polo (Year 7 & 8) involves League games on Friday nights.
HOCKEY
Hockey is under the direction of local premier club Somerville. The programme is led by former Black Stick and the club's Coaching Director Simon Norton.
Sessions will target individual technical skills working from the club’s specific syllabus before breaking into small game situations where players are taught “where and when” to be during match play.
The programme offers a base for developing players through to the upskilling of rising stars with representive aspirations. Participants also become eligible for the club's "Hooked on Hockey" holiday programme reserved for club members.
KARATE
Sensei Dennis May (8th Dan Black Belt) is the Director of the King’s School Extra-curricular Academies Karate programme. He and his instructors continue to run their ever-popular classes.
Our aim is to provide quality instruction with a strong emphasis on personal development, self-defence, and health and fitness. The King’s karate programme will be teaching a traditional style of karate called Goju Ryu (or hard and soft style). Goju Ryu has an equal emphasis on hard and soft techniques, and is ideally suited for younger students. A traditional style, it is firstly a complete exercise programme and secondly, includes the practical benefits of self-defence.
Training
Initially students learn in a strictly non-contact environment progressing according to their own abilities. Emphasis is placed on defence rather than attack. As a student advances technically they learn increasingly intricate techniques and are gradually exposed to controlled contact applications of karate techniques.
Students will occasionally be taught self-defence. Techniques that do not involve punching or kicking, but rather simple yet effective restraining holds. Progress made by the boys so far has been outstanding with many of the students becoming yellow belts and beyond.
TENNIS
The King’s Extra-Curricular Academies Tennis programme is conducted by Geoff Beech. Coaching squads will cover basic technique to advanced stroke production and include footwork, drills, match play (singles and doubles and decision making tactics).

KAPA HAKA
TE ROOPU TAITAMA O KINGI KAPA HAKA
Te Roopu Taitama o Kingi Kapa Haka was formed in the early 1990s and has become an integral part of the school’s ethos. The size of the group varies from year to year, but numbers have grown to around 100 boys from Years 4 to 8. There are many reasons for the group’s popularity, though the strength is demonstrated in its focus on core values, its spirituality, its kaupapa and supportive nature.
The boys practise every Tuesday morning. Kaiarahi (Tutor Leaders) are there to assist in the learning of waiata, haka and mau rakau.
Every year the Kapa Haka group has cultural exchanges with King’s College, Diocesan and St Cuthbert’s kapa haka groups. The boys also powhiri any other visiting schools/teams, manuhiri coming to the kura. There are also visits to local Marae for workshops to gain an in-depth understanding of our local iwi, Ngati Whatua. These are very important occasions to reinforce our growing cultural and historical links.
HOLIDAY PROGRAMME
During the year we offer a number of different school holiday programmes for our boys and siblings. These are run by our staff and Sports School providers and cover a range of interests.
Full week and daily programmes are offered every holiday. This allows parents the flexibility for their child to attend for the day, two or three days or the full week. Breaks and lunchtimes are supervised and children are requested to bring a packed lunch and morning tea.
