THE ARTS
At King’s School, the Arts play an important part of everyday life and every boy is encouraged to be creative, whether it be in visual or performing arts
VISUAL ART
King’s has a very dynamic art programme for all boys starting from Year 1 to Year 8.
We have three state-of-the-art Art Studios and four dedicated art teachers enabling the boys to enjoy a variety of artistic styles and genres.
The boys have an opportunity to explore many facets of art including painting, drawing, graphics, design, sculpture, craft design technology, digital design technology, mixed media, modelling and film animation. We have regular visiting artists at school and hold an annual Art Exhibition for all students’ work.
MUSIC
A point of difference for us at King’s is to be able to provide a unique format for teaching music to our students. Every boy from Year 2 to 8 learns instruments in ensembles in a fully practical programme. The boys learn to play in a social environment and to perform regularly for the community. Year 2 to 3 boys learn string instruments, Years 4 to 7 symphonic band instruments and Year 8 a rock curriculum.
JAZZ BAND
This group is auditioned at the beginning of the year and rehearses before school. The King’s School Jazz Band work on classic Jazz repertoire as well as rock instrumentals. More of a big band style group, the Jazz Band perform at various events throughout the year.
CHAPEL CHOIR AND ALL THE KING'S BOYS CHOIR
Chapel Choir (Years 7 & 8) and All the King's Boys Choir (Years 5 & 6) choristers are auditioned at the beginning of the year. King’s School choir are renowned for outstanding choral work and perform at Sunday Services in and around Auckland and for visiting groups.
HONOURS BAND
The King’s School Honours Band is selected by the Director of Music. The selection process is based on the ability and attitude of the boys in music class. Our Honours music students meet together once a week from across the school levels, to work on more complex music literature. These boys also take part in an Honours Band Festival with students from other schools. The workshops and concerts are great fun and provide a much needed connection with other musicians.
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
The orchestra is a group of over 50 boys, and includes both string and wind players. The group works on performing a wide range of concert literature to a high standard, and ensures string players have an opportunity to also perform repertoire for large groups. Entry is by audition at the beginning of the year. The orchestra performs for school assemblies and at the annual Cathedral Concert.
KING’S CHORUS
Singers from Years 3 and 4 are invited to join this group as a training ground for the All the King's Boys Choir and the Chapel Choir. King’s Chorus perform at assemblies and Sunday services. Rehearsals are once a week and the chorus is an allcomers' choir.
KING'S STRING GROUP
The String Group is by invitation to string players in the school.
PRODUCTION BAND
This group is for musicians who want to be involved in the school’s major production. This group is selected based on instruments required for the school shows each year. The Production Band aims to perform at a very high standard.

PERFORMING ARTS
Our partners from the pform.nz provide all the boys with world class tutoring in the disciplines of dance and drama. Our major school production is held in Term 2 and is open to any boy from Year 5 – 8. A Prep and Junior School Music Showcase is also performed to the wider school community in Term 3. In addition to these productions, each Year Group performs a showcase of their work to their parents and friends throughout the school year.
