Kingsway:
If you could give advice
to any boy who would like to body
build what would you say to them?
Rome wasn’t built in a day. Do it
consistently. Eating and training
carefully. Compare it to what you do
in school. If you want to do well at
exams you need to study day in day
out. To do well in body building it
is exactly the same – you have
to work at it. It is all about self
discipline. If you don’t succeed the
first time, learn from your mistakes
and try again.
Kingsway:
What is the best award
you have won? When and where did
you win it?
The Australian international title in Sydney
and the New Zealand Open Men’s title.
Kingsway:
Who is or has been your
role model?
Arnold Schwarzenegger. He trained hard
and did the same thing over and over again.
He is very self motivated and I try to be
the same. Also my trainer, James Pascoe
inspired me to train hard and succeed. Sadly
he passed away 6 years ago.
Kingsway:
What is your favourite sport
other than body building?
I follow Rugby league and for 10 years I was
a semi professional soccer player.
Kingsway:
What is the best thing about
body building?
Reaching the goals I want to achieve and
therefore I put everything into achieving
them. I enjoy earning success on stage for
what I have achieved in training. Also having
control of my body. Learning when to say
“no” say to food and things that are not
good for my body.
Kingsway:
What is the hardest part
of bodybuilding?
Maintaining the necessary diet is hard. You
need willpower sometimes to say no to
certain foods. It is all worth it though when
you win a competition.
M
ost of us knowMr Orchard as
the well-known “man about
the school” Property Manager
at King’s. But many won’t know that Mr
Orchard is also a professional bodybuilder
and spends hours and hours of training to
compete with the world’s best
.
Kingsway
caught up with him to chat about
his achievements.
Kingsway:
How long have you been
body building ?
I have been body building now for 13 years.
Kingsway:
What do you eat for
breakfast, lunch and dinner?
Porridge and chocolate protein shake for
breakfast, tuna mid-morning, tuna at lunch
and again in the afternoon, another protein
shake. Chicken for dinner and then another
protein shake at around 9.30pm.
Kingsway:
What is your favourite food?
Hamburgers and chips every Saturday!
But I have to stop that six weeks before a
competition.
Kingsway:
Do you have any specific
competitions that you have in your sights?
Christchurch Grand Prix and the Auckland
Pan Pacifics.
AN INTERVIEWWITHMR ORCHARD, WINNER OF THE
2013
Bodybuilding
Championships
Kingsway:
Have you met any famous
bodybuilders?
Gunter Schlierkamp a body builder from
West Germany. I have also met many
professionals from Australia.
Kingsway:
How long did it take for you to
get into the physical shape you are now?
It took me 13 years and STILL I’M NOT
PERFECT!
Kingsway:
Have you ever felt like giving
up. Like you thought you couldn’t go on
any longer?
Many times. You go through many different
emotions when you can’t have things you
want, but if it was easy then everybody
would do it.
Kingsway:
Why do you bodybuild?
I wanted to be well built. I used to play
soccer and I wanted to challenge myself
in something else. Bodybuilding is an
individual sport, so you can’t blame anyone
else if you do something wrong.
Kingsway:
What would you say to
people who have tried extremely hard
to do something like bodybuilding for
instance but they just give up?
Don’t ever give up - learn from your
mistakes. I know what my strengths are
already. If you fail you should try again. If
you are better than before then you are
always a winner.
