Dragons’ Den
A
t the start of Term 3, the Year 8 boys began their annual
Dragons’ Den project. In groups of 4, boys had to come up with
an innovative product or service that would satisfy a want, overcome
a problem or meet a challenge. Competing against other teams in their class,
8 finalists were then selected to impress ‘The Dragons’ themselves - Kate Ross,
James McGlinn and Tony Sissons. The Dragons had $100,000 to invest in the
company they believed had the best creative, entrepreneurial idea, coupled with
a strong business and marketing plan.
There were so many creative ideas on show the day of the Dragons’ Den final, from a device
connected to your shoe that charged your phone wirelessly every time you took a step, to a
product that sorted out tangled cords, to an online restaurant booking service.
All the boys worked incredibly hard throughout the term and the presentations were of a very
high standard. But only one team could be the winning company on the day! In the end it was
a company called Unique Wheelz that most impressed the Dragons. Their company produced
special wheels for skateboards that did not skid or slip in wet conditions allowing thousands
of skateboarders around the world to continue boarding even in the wettest of conditions.
The Unique Wheelz management consisted of George Ferrier, Henk Tomkins, Jake Mackey
and Henry McElroy.
The QQT (Quick Quake Take) team came 2nd with a mobile emergency pack designed
especially for children to take with them in case of an earthquake. In 3rd place were the Easy
Bite company who designed a special website that allowed customers to book any restaurant
of their choice online and even view their reserved table.
