I
n Term 3, Hugo Hay’s grandfather, Peter Hay,
came to visit the Year 4 boys. Peter Hay was the
commodore of the Royal New Zealand Yacht
Squadron and was part of the Black Magic teamwhen
it won the 1995 race in San Diego. He was responsible
for bringing the America’s Cup back to New Zealand
after the historic win. He came to give us a talk on the
history of the America’s Cup.
Mr. Hay had all the Year 4 boys come to the library.
After we had settled down, he got out a replica of the
America’s Cup and let everyone have a good look. Then
he whisked us through the history, starting with the first
ever race right through to Sir Peter Blake’s death in 2001.
He showed us an amazing selection of photographs.
Finally, all the classes had a photograph taken with the
America’s Cup replica. It was a pleasure to have such
a great sailor at our school to educate us about such a
worthwhile subject.
