T
he adidas KIDS AUCKLANDMARATHON took place on 3rd
November and King’s School had 30 registered boys from Years 5 –
8 preparing for their big moment! The boys had been training hard
a couple of early mornings a week and documented the distance they had
run each day. The aimwas to complete a full marathon (42.195 kilometres)
by the end of their training and then run the last 2.195 kilometres in front
of thousands of cheering fans, friends and family through the Victoria
Park finish line of the adidas AUCKLANDMARATHON on Sunday 3rd
November.
Last year KIDS MARATHON was embraced by 31 Auckland schools, and over
1350 participants. All kids at primary school, age 7 and over and intermediate
school kids are welcome to participate and benefit from this life changing
programme. Because the goal of the programme is to ‘FINISH’, children of
all levels of ability can participate and be successful. However, each entrant
receives their own race number for race day and a timing chip attached to
their shoelaces so that they can record their exact time on the day.
By taking part in the adidas KIDS AUCKLAND MARATHON, children develop
life-long fitness skills, social emotional learning, the tremendous feeling of
accomplishment and confidence for themselves, without the high risk involved
with young kids running a full marathon in one day. All participants receive
a medal and a T shirt but more importantly, develop lifelong fitness skills,
improve fitness levels and achieve a feeling of huge accomplishment.
Our boys achieved great success in their first marathon run and we
congratulate them on their determination, commitment and perseverance.
A special thanks to Mr Stickley who encouraged the boys throughout
their training.
Sam Roberton
